Life at the Barn: Finding Inspiration in Yorkshire

When people discover The Barn Shed, they often find our candles, furniture, flowers and gift boxes first. But behind everything we create is a place, and a story, that began long before the business itself.

At the heart of it all is a Yorkshire barn.

Built in 1730, the barn was originally used to house animals and, when we first found it, it need a lot of TLC. Weathered stone walls, ageing beams and years of history hidden beneath layers of neglect. While many people would have seen an overwhelming renovation project, we saw potential. Not just for a home, but for a different way of living.

Yet the story of The Barn Shed begins even earlier than that.

Yorkshire has always been home. Although life took me further afield for a time, through travel, city living and several years spent in London, there was always something pulling me back. When my husband and I started thinking about where we wanted to raise our family, the answer felt surprisingly simple. We wanted to be closer to my family to put down roots, and to build a life in the place that had shaped me.

The barn became part of that journey.

Over time, the old farm barn slowly became a family home. Every room tells a story of restoration. Original features were preserved throughout, centuries-old beams became part of everyday life, and forgotten spaces found a new purpose.

Alongside the renovation, another long-held passion was quietly waiting in the background.

As a teenager, I spent my Saturdays working in a local florist, and from that moment I fell in love with flowers. There was something magical about working with seasonal stems, natural textures and colours inspired by the changing year. Years later, I created the flowers for my own wedding and for friends and family, never quite losing that connection to bringing beauty into everyday spaces.

Looking back now, it is easy to see how those experiences shaped what The Barn Shed would become.

Today, inspiration comes from all around us. From the changing Yorkshire seasons and the rolling countryside beyond our windows, to the old well, pump and street lamp that remain in the garden as reminders of the barn’s history. It comes from herbs growing outside the kitchen door, fresh flowers gathered from the garden, and the simple rhythm of life lived close to nature.

Life at the barn is not always slow. Like many families, our days are often busy, full of work, responsibilities and the endless demands of modern life. But living here has taught us that slow living is not about doing less. It is about noticing the moments in between.

These are the moments that inspire everything we create.

Whether it is a fragrance inspired by the kitchen garden, a carefully restored piece of furniture, or a seasonal arrangement of dried or artificial  flowers, every collection begins with a story. More often than not, that story begins here.

The Barn Shed has never been about creating a perfect home. Instead, it is about creating a home filled with character, comfort and meaning. A place where old things are given a second life, where the changing seasons are celebrated, and where beauty can be found in the everyday.

We hope that through our collections, journal entries and stories from the barn, we can inspire others to bring a little of that feeling into their own homes.

Because while The Barn Shed may have started with a barn, it has always been about something much bigger: creating spaces, moments and memories that feel like home.
